Fifth generation mobile broadband.

5G is attracting attention as a technology that symbolizes the arrival of a new era, with commercial services already launched in South Korea and the United States. In the summer of 2020, ahead of the big event where people from all over the world will visit Tokyo, it was announced that 5G would be commercialized all at once in Japan, and it became a hot topic.

In preparation for the start of domestic 5G services, MKI is conducting technical surveys related to 5G and working toward its utilization. In this MKI Knowledge, we will talk about the basic features of 5G, expected roles and application examples, and local 5G that can be used locally as a self-employed radio.

5G is an abbreviation for 5th generation mobile communication system and is one of the next generation communication standards used for communication such as mobile phones. 5G generally refers to 5G network services provided by telecommunications carriers on a nationwide scale.

The "G" in 5G is an acronym for "Generation," which means that it is the 5th generation.

Looking at the history of mobile phones, a new generation of communication standards has appeared in a span of about 10 years.

In September 2015, the Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) issued a 5G performance requirement, and after that, the Project Coordination Group (PCG) manages progress. 5G is defined as 5G that conforms to the communication standards of Release 15 or later defined by 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project: a project that standardizes communication method specifications) under the control of Project Co-ordination Group.

There are three main features of 5G.

・ High speed and large capacity (eMBB: enhanced Mobile Broadband)

It is possible to provide broadband services 100 times faster than the current 4th generation mobile communication system (4G).

Maximum transmission speed is 20 Gbps (100 times the current LTE)

-Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communications (URLLC)
Users can operate and control remote robots in real time without being aware of delays (time lag).

Delays in communication networks, that is, time lags can be kept extremely small.

Delay of about 1ms (1/10 of current LTE)

・ Ultra-massive terminal connection (mMTC: massive Machine Type Communication)

All personal devices including smartphones and PCs can be connected to the Internet

The number of terminals that can be connected from one base station at the same time can be dramatically increased compared to the past.

1 million units / ㎢ can be connected (100 times the current LTE)

Local 5G is a local 5G network built mainly by general companies and local governments that are not major telecommunications carriers according to individual needs. Companies and local governments can receive frequency allocation in a limited area and use 5G as a self-employed radio. Compared to the services of carriers, it is less susceptible to communication failures and disasters in other locations and network congestion.

Of the 3.7 / 4.5GHz band and 28GHz band 5G bands that have been assigned to four mobile phone operators as frequencies that can be used by local 5G, the 4.5GHz band 200MHz width (4.6-4.8GHz) and 28GHz band 900MHz width (28.2-29.1GHz) is planned. In addition, the 100MHz width of 28.2-28.3GHz, which has been considered for sharing with satellite communication services, will be available in the future.

・ How can local 5G be utilized?

Typical use cases envisioned at this time are carrier 5G such as "wireless factory manufacturing line", "remote control of construction machinery", and "tourism support by AR (augmented reality) / VR (virtual reality)". The use cases that are being considered will be provided as a service within a limited area, and the current situation is that we have not found any use unique to local 5G.

There are many scenes that can be supported by private LTE (Long Term Evolution) based on the current 4G technology and Wi-Fi (wireless LAN), so it is necessary to select an appropriate method.

・ Advantages of using local 5G

Since local 5G is an independent network isolated from the public network, "high security" can be guaranteed, and "communication quality is stable" without being affected by external traffic. It also has the advantage of being able to flexibly build a network according to the required period.

in conclusion

Since 5G uses different frequency bands and methods for current 4G, a transition period will occur. Therefore, it is not possible to immediately start using all the performances of "high speed and large capacity", "high reliability and low delay transmission", and "ultra-mass terminal connection" at the same time, but when these three features are realized, various new services will be created. It is expected to be done.

Looking ahead to the start of 5G services, MKI will consider what value can be provided to customers by utilizing 5G, and will continue to actively work on the entire wireless technology including Wi-Fi, which has many achievements. I would like to go.
